Fake it until you make it.
We’ve all heard that line, and some of us hate the idea of it, because they might associate it with their actions being some sort of lie.
I’ve long been a student of studying motivation and psychology, both for gains in my own personal life, but also in helping others. One of my own “10 personal commandments” that changed my life was from a mentor years ago that stated, “you can either let emotions dictate your actions, or let your actions dictate your emotions; but you can only control one of those scenarios.”
On a recent Tim Ferriss podcast that featured self-proclaimed self-experimenter AJ Jacobs (who has written on plenty of fascinating subjects as well), they phrased it the way it is phrased in the title of this article. The phrasing really resonated with me. Tim Ferriss and AJ Jacobs also associated that phrase with another very valuable self-development tidbit that I’m very familiar with, in a way that I had never really thought of before. Essentially, the almost cliched phrase “you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable” ties in well with this. In order to grow, you need to make yourself uncomfortable or do things that you normally wouldn’t do.
Is doing something new or uncomfortable lying to yourself?
I don’t think so. But isn’t it a form of “faking it until you make it”? You’re experimenting with yourself to get the most out of yourself and your life.
I find this particularly true of fashion. When I read a scientific article like this about your hormones changing depending on what you wear, you quickly realize that there’s much more going on than you think. How you dress doesn’t just affect how others see and treat you, it literally affects what’s going on in your very own body. Your body, at a biological and chemical level, changes itself based on what you’re wearing, which is completely separate from how it changes based on how the outside world treats you.
Isn’t that fascinating?
There’s quite a lot going on subconsciously and physically both within ourselves, and within others, that is scientifically verified mind you.
So, what do you do with this information?
Well, that depends on you. It would be easy for me to recommend a subscription to The Loaded Vault, but that might sound too salesy to some of our readers. But, I do recommend that you be somewhat scientific with yourself. What do you want to accomplish this year? Is it a romantic relationship, advancement in your career, higher social status? Those things and more are all attainable, so long as you figure out what you want and why and actually write it down.
And, yes, you can act your way into the feeling that you want, rather than waiting for the feeling to come before you take action. If you do the latter, and the feeling never comes though, would you be fine with never attaining your goals? Mull that over, because I doubt it. And, if you need a halfway point, because it does take rigorous mental stamina to constantly push yourself into actions that you’re not feeling up to, then we suggest you dress the part that you want to become first. Do this, and as that Scientific American article we linked to earlier will testify to, that will literally trigger the appropriate chemicals in your body to cause you to feel a certain way. Those chemicals will start that feeling, and that mild feeling change will make taking action just a little bit easier.
